Speaker Cable Selection Guide for Professional Audio Installers

Speaker Cable Selection Guide for Professional Audio Installers

Choosing the right speaker cable is one of the most impactful decisions in any professional audio installation. Cable gauge, conductor material, jacket construction, and shielding all affect signal integrity, installation logistics, and long-term reliability.

This guide covers what AV integrators, live sound engineers, and electrical contractors need to know when specifying speaker cable — with references to actual products from the LBS AudioCable factory catalog.

1. Understanding Speaker Cable Types

Single-Jacket Round Speaker Cable (LBSRVH Series)

Round-profile speaker cables with a single outer jacket are the workhorse of professional audio. The LBSRVH series uses 4N oxygen-free copper (OFC) conductors with PVC insulation, cotton thread reinforcement filling, and a flexible PVC jacket. Available in 2, 4, 6, and 8-core configurations with cross-sections from 1.5 mm² to 6.0 mm².

Common applications: Main PA runs, subwoofer cabling, stage monitor feeds, fixed installation in theatres and venues.

Available models:

Jacketed Multi-Core Speaker Cable (LBSRVS Series)

When you need multiple channels in a single pull, jacketed speaker cables keep installation tidy. The LBSRVS series bundles individually insulated twisted pairs inside an overall PVC jacket, providing mechanical protection and easier cable management.

Common applications: Multi-channel stage boxes, portable PA systems, studio wiring, multi-zone commercial audio.

Available models:

Parallel / Hi-Fi Speaker Cable (LBSRVB Series)

Flat parallel-construction speaker cables are ideal for short runs, Hi-Fi systems, and installations where a low-profile cable is preferred. The LBSRVB series comes in both metric (mm²) and strand-count specifications.

Common applications: Home theatre, Hi-Fi systems, commercial background music, short-distance PA connections.

2. How to Choose the Right Cable Gauge

Cable gauge selection depends on three factors: power level, cable length, and speaker impedance.

Speaker Impedance Cable Length Recommended Gauge
4 Ω Up to 15 m 2.5 mm²
4 Ω 15–30 m 4.0 mm²
4 Ω 30–50 m 6.0 mm²
8 Ω Up to 30 m 1.5 mm²
8 Ω 30–60 m 2.5 mm²
8 Ω 60–100 m 4.0 mm²

Rule of thumb: Doubling the distance requires doubling the cross-sectional area to maintain the same signal loss. For subwoofer runs and low-impedance PA systems, err on the heavier side — the cost difference is small compared to the installation labour.

3. Conductor Material: OFC vs CCA

All LBS professional audio cables use 4N (99.99%) oxygen-free copper (OFC) conductors.

  • OFC: Lower resistance, better corrosion resistance, more flexible. Standard for professional applications.
  • CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminium): Cheaper but higher resistance, more brittle, not recommended for professional installation.

For installers quoting long-term projects, OFC is the industry expectation. LBS does not use CCA in its professional audio cable range.

4. Jacket and Insulation Options

LBS speaker cables use PVC insulation and PVC jacket as standard, with the following configuration options available for OEM orders:

  • Jacket colour: Black (standard), blue, green, and custom RAL colours
  • Jacket printing: Permanent white-ink extrusion marking with your brand name, model number, and specification text
  • Outer diameter: Configurable to project requirements
  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Available on request for projects requiring enhanced fire safety

5. Installation Best Practices

  1. Keep signal and power cables separated: Run speaker cables at least 300 mm from mains power cables to avoid electromagnetic interference.
  2. Avoid sharp bends: Maintain a minimum bend radius of 8× the cable outer diameter to prevent conductor damage.
  3. Label both ends: Use heat-shrink labels or cable markers with channel numbers before pulling.
  4. Use proper strain relief: At connector termination points, ensure the cable jacket is clamped, not the individual conductors.
  5. Test before finishing: Run a continuity and impedance test on every installed cable before closing walls or conduits.

6. OEM and Custom Cable Options

LBS AudioCable Factory manufactures OEM speaker cables for distributors and brands worldwide. Customisation options include:

  • Conductor gauge and core count (2–8 cores, 0.5–6.0 mm²)
  • Jacket colour, printing, and packaging
  • Connector assembly (Speakon, XLR, banana plug on request)
  • Custom labelling and branded packaging

FAQ

What gauge speaker cable do I need for a 1000W PA system?

For a 1000W system at 4 Ω with cable runs under 20 m, 4.0 mm² is recommended. For longer runs or 2 Ω loads, step up to 6.0 mm². Always calculate based on your specific cable length and impedance.

Can I use the same speaker cable for indoor and outdoor installations?

Standard PVC-jacketed speaker cable is designed for indoor use. For outdoor or in-wall installations, specify LSZH jacket material during the OEM inquiry process.

What is the difference between LBSRVH and LBSRVS series?

LBSRVH cables have a single round jacket with reinforcement filling — ideal for main PA runs. LBSRVS cables are twisted-pair construction with an overall jacket — better for multi-channel and studio applications where crosstalk matters.

How do I order custom-printed speaker cable with my brand?

Contact LBS via WhatsApp or the inquiry form with your desired model, conductor specification, jacket colour, and printing text. Sampling takes 5–10 working days; production 15–30 working days for standard OEM orders.

Do you provide cable test reports or certificates of conformity?

Yes. Material test reports and certificates of conformity are available upon request. Specify your documentation requirements during the quotation phase.
