DMX512 impedance: what the standard says, and what this data sheet states

DMX512 runs on the RS-485 electrical layer. RS-485 is specified around a 120 Ω nominal characteristic impedance on shielded twisted-pair cable, and impedance comes from the construction — conductor spacing, insulation and shield geometry — not from the copper size alone.

LBS publishes 120 Ω on the double-shielded LBSDMX…-2 models. On this single-shielded model the published data sheet states shield type, braiding, jacket O.D. and temperature range, and does not state an impedance figure. If your project documentation has to carry one, request the value against this model instead of assuming it.

Single-shield or double-shield: what the order has to state

LBS builds two DMX512 families with the same two conductors, the same 6.3 mm matt EPVC jacket and the same -20 °C to +70 °C rating. The difference is the shield, and that is the line the purchase order has to be specific about.

Where the run shares a tray, a truss or a cable path with dimmer racks, LED power supplies or motor drives, the foil layer under the braid is the reason to specify the double-shielded construction. Where the data pair is routed clear of that equipment, the single-shielded spiral is the simpler build and the usual choice.

What is the difference between LBSDMX168050 and LBSDMX168050-2?

LBSDMX168050 is single-shielded: a high-density OFC spiral at 85%+ coverage. LBSDMX168050-2 is the double-shielded construction, 100% coverage AL-Foil plus a heavy-duty tinned-copper braid, and it publishes a 120 Ω characteristic impedance. Conductor count, jacket and temperature rating are the same on both.

What characteristic impedance does this cable have?

The published data sheet for the single-shielded family states the shield type, braiding, jacket O.D. and temperature range, and does not state an impedance figure. The double-shielded family states 120 Ω. If your tender or project documentation has to carry an impedance value, ask for it against the specific model rather than assuming one.

Can it be terminated with 5-pin XLR?

Yes — LBS supplies pre-assembled XLR-terminated DMX512 lighting control cable on request. Send the connector gender, pin count, length and quantity with the enquiry.

Is this the same as a microphone cable?

No. Both are shielded twisted constructions, but DMX512 runs on the RS-485 electrical layer, which specifies a 120 Ω nominal characteristic impedance, while microphone cable is built for balanced audio. See DMX cable vs microphone cable.

LBSDMX Single-Shielded Series — Variants

The single-shielded family is built in seven braiding sizes on the same 6.3 mm jacket. Match the braiding to the mechanical duty of the run; the conductor count does not change.
