NL2 vs. NL4 vs. NL8: Lautsprecher-Twist-Lock-Anschlüsse

What a pin set is

Before comparing the three formats, one term decides everything: a pin set is one positive contact plus one negative contact, and it carries exactly one speaker circuit.

So the number in the format name is not a contact count to be read literally — it is the basis of the channel count. Understanding pin sets makes the whole range predictable.

NL2: one circuit

NL2 has a single pin set, so it carries one speaker circuit. It is the format for a straightforward single-channel connection between amplifier and loudspeaker.

The matching cable is two-conductor. A four-conductor cable can be terminated on an NL2, but two of its conductors will have nowhere to go.

NL4: two circuits

NL4 has two pin sets, so it carries two speaker circuits. That makes it the format for a two-channel link, and it is also what allows a single connector to feed a bi-amped cabinet — one pin set per amplifier section.

The matching cable is four-conductor. This is the most common format in professional sound reinforcement, which is why a four-pole twist lock connector is the one most often specified.

NL8: four circuits

NL8 has four pin sets, so it carries four speaker circuits. It is used where several channels must travel over one connector — large sound reinforcement systems and multi-way cabinets.

The matching cable is eight-conductor. Pairing an NL8 with anything less than an eight-conductor cable wastes contacts, and pairing it with a cable that has more conductors than pin sets leaves the surplus unconnected.

The rule that prevents most mistakes

The cable must have at least as many conductors as the connector has pins, and the number of pin sets must match the number of amplifier channels you intend to carry.

Stated as a table:

connector pin sets speaker circuits matching conductors
NL2 1 1 2
NL4 2 2 4
NL8 4 4 8

Read together with the cable range, this is the whole decision. A four-pole connector with a four-conductor cable feeds two circuits; a four-pole connector with a two-conductor cable feeds one circuit and leaves two contacts unused.

Pin numbering: what 1+, 1−, 2+ and 2− mean

Buyers rarely ask for a connector by pin set. They ask for it by pin marking — “pin 1+”, “the 2+ contact”, “a 4-pole with 1− on the left”. The same contact is written two ways in the trade: 1+ on the connector moulding, and often +1 in a written specification or an RFQ. Both mean the first pin set, and the numbering is what makes a multi-pole connector unambiguous once the drawing leaves your desk.

Connector Pole markings on the body Circuit 1 Circuit 2 Circuit 3 Circuit 4
NL2 (2-pole) 1+, 1− 1+ / 1− — — —
NL4 (4-pole) 1+, 1−, 2+, 2− 1+ / 1− 2+ / 2− — —
NL8 (8-pole) 1+ to 4+, 1− to 4− 1+ / 1− 2+ / 2− 3+ / 3− 4+ / 4−

Two rules follow from the markings. A pin number is not a circuit: 1+ and 1− together are one circuit, so a four-pole connector carries two speaker circuits and not four. And polarity is decided by which conductor sits on which marking, not by the colour of the wire — if 1+ lands on one conductor at the amplifier end and on the other conductor at the cabinet end, the cabinet receives an inverted signal. The symptom is not silence: it is a thin, low-output result when two cabinets stand side by side, and it is very hard to trace once the rack is closed. Mark both plugs before soldering.

Bi-amp: which pair goes where

A four-pole connector hands you two pairs — 1+/1− and 2+/2− — and that is exactly what a bi-amped cabinet needs. Which pair feeds the low-frequency section is set by the cabinet and the amplifier, not by the connector: brands differ, and a cabinet that uses 1+/1− for its full-range or LF input is not the same as one that assigns the pairs the other way round. Take the assignment from the label on the cabinet or the amplifier manual, write it on the specification, and terminate both ends to match.

Compatibility, correctly understood

The formats share a common locking principle and the smaller formats fit the larger sockets by design, so an NL2 plug can be used in an NL4 socket. What is not shared is the circuit count: fitting a connector does not add circuits.

When replacing a connector, match the pin set count to the existing cable, not to the socket it happens to fit.

Why the connector is not just a plug

Professional twist lock connectors are built around three practical requirements: a locking mechanism that will not release under vibration, a cable retention system that grips the jacket rather than the conductors, and a housing that survives being stepped on. A chuck or clamp retention system holds the cable by its outer jacket, which is what protects the terminations when the cable is pulled.

What to write on the specification

State four things and the ambiguity disappears:

Inspection point What to write
Connector format NL2, NL4 or NL8 — or simply the pole count
Cable conductors How many, and the mm² of each
Channels required How many speaker circuits the run has to carry
Gender Plug or socket, and the count of each

Replacing a connector on an existing cable

When a connector is being replaced rather than a new cable being built, the cable in hand sets the limit. Count its conductors first, then choose the format that matches:

  • two conductors — NL2, or NL4 with two contacts unused
  • four conductors — NL4
  • eight conductors — NL8

Choosing a larger connector than the cable supports does not add circuits. It leaves contacts unconnected, which is a common source of confusion when the system is later expanded.

Retention is not a detail

A twist lock connector holds in two places: the lock that stops it releasing, and the retention system that grips the cable itself. A chuck or clamp that grips the outer jacket protects the terminations from strain. A retention system that grips the conductors instead puts the load on the smallest part of the assembly — and for cable that is coiled, dragged and re-terminated, that difference decides how long the assembly lasts.

Summary

  • A pin set is one speaker circuit: one positive, one negative.
  • NL2 = 1 circuit, NL4 = 2 circuits, NL8 = 4 circuits.
  • The cable needs at least as many conductors as the connector has pins.
  • A connector that fits is not a connector that matches.
  • 1+ and 1− are one pin set: the marking on the connector body is the polarity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an NL4 connector on a two-conductor cable?

Yes — the connector will work for one circuit and two contacts will be unused. If you need two circuits, the cable must be four-conductor.

What is the difference between NL2, NL4 and NL8?

The number of pin sets, and therefore the number of speaker circuits each connector can carry: one, two and four respectively.

Is a four-pole connector the same as a bi-amp connector?

No, but it enables bi-amping. A four-pole connector carries two circuits, which is exactly what a bi-amped cabinet needs — one circuit per amplifier section.

Do twist lock connectors work with other brands of socket?

The formats are built to a common interface so the smaller formats fit the larger sockets by design. Confirm the pin set count against your amplifier and cabinet before ordering.

What is the difference between 1+ and +1 on a twist lock connector?

Nothing — they are the same contact. 1+ is the marking printed on the connector body; +1 is how that pin is often written in a specification or an RFQ. In a four-pole connector, 1+ and 1− make up the first pin set and 2+ and 2− the second.

What happens if 1+ and 1− are swapped at one end of a cable?

The loudspeaker receives an inverted signal. The cable is not damaged, but when two cabinets stand next to each other the low-frequency output partially cancels and one of them sounds weaker. Mark both ends before soldering and re-check the markings against the connector body when re-terminating.
